Black History Month 2024 Campaign

1 February 2024

In the current tapestry of time, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture serves as a poignant reminder of the historical role African American artists have played as catalysts for change. From the poetic resonance of Langston Hughes to the revolutionary beats of James Brown, the stage presence of Josephine Baker, the literary prowess of Toni Morrison, and the cinematic brilliance of Jordan Peele, each artist has woven a unique thread into the collective fabric of our history. As an African American artist, I take great pride in contributing to this legacy, particularly within a company dedicated to effecting real behavioral change, a company founded by artists where the art of drama remains the cornerstone of our approach.

In these tumultuous times, the clarion call for artists to stand as champions of social justice resounds louder than ever. We, as artists, must recognize the profound impact our voices and artistry can have on fostering real, progressive change in all aspects of our lives. This transformative change, extending across industries, is not merely a desire but a necessity to realize Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream.

Art, in its myriad forms, possesses the unique ability to draw humanity closer, compelling us to venture beyond our echo chambers and directly engage with energies and perspectives that challenge our own. It motivates us to adopt different points of view, fostering a space for us to see the world through another individual’s lens. Art, the mirror to our struggles, accomplishments, and humanity, reveals that we are more alike than different. It unveils the truth of our existence.

As we honor Black History Month, let us deliberately create space to experience art in its rawest, most honest form. In return, a profound truth will be revealed: art is life. The Black Employee Network at Steps Drama celebrates the enduring legacy of African American artists who paved the way and those who will undoubtedly follow. May their contributions continue to inspire transformative change, bringing us closer to the realization of a shared dream.
