Melissa has spent her entire life in Southern California. She participated in both the Campuswide Honors Program and the Social Ecology Honors Program at the University of California, Irvine, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Social behaviour. While attending UCI, Melissa worked as a teaching assistant, research assistant, and child care intern. After college, Melissa worked behind the scenes at different companies, where she became interested in working in operations.
She joined Steps in July 2022, which is her first experience in a "work from anywhere" organization.
Outside of work, Melissa enjoys crocheting, gardening, playing video games, and spending time with her dog. She also enjoys learning new languages, and is currently learning Spanish and French.

I conducted field research at an aquarium and had the opportunity to interview a mammalogist. During the interview, the mammalogist asked if I wanted to train the sea otters. It was not part of my project, but I was not going to reject the opportunity. I ended up holding hands with a sea otter!
